Joel Levinson takes pleasure in capturing what is compelling in the commonplace.

For over a half-century, Levinson photographed the architecture and interior design projects produced by his Philadelphia design studio, Joel Levinson Associates. His photographs from around the world have been exhibited in local art galleries, the Philadelphia Art Alliance, and at the University City Science Center art gallery. He is working on several books that combine his photographs with his non-fiction essays. His 1973 photographs of Charles Rennie Macintosh’s famed Hill House in Scotland have been collected by the National Trust of Scotland for use on their website.

Levinson is also an author, museum founder, and scientific theorist. His Daring Diagonal Virtual Museum www.ddvm.org, features photographs of Diagonality in art and architecture from around the world.

Levinson prefers working in natural light, using his Nikon 35MM camera with or without a tripod…mostly without. He excels at portraits, architecture, landscapes, flowers, and commonplace objects viewed with an uncommon perspective.

His robust but nuanced sense of composition combined with his chromatic sensibilities have served his purposes well in seeking to create iconic, timeless, and sophisticated records of whatever catches his eye.

When Levinson photographs paintings in museums, which is often, he may choose to capture the entire painting or sculpture, or just an excerpt that holds special meaning for him; rather like making a design entry in a notebook.

The photographs here presented and the rights thereto are available for purchase. Joel Levinson welcomes assignments that make use of his unique vision based on a complex cosmological philosophy that underlies all of his creative endeavors. This website is intended to function much like an archive of Joel Levinson’s photographs.
